In 2022, 40% of children's books were written or illustrated by someone who is Black, Indigenous, or a person of color. 6% of books primarily featured a character with a disability, 6% primarily featured an LGBTQ character, and only 4% primarily featured a non-Christian religion. These same voices are often the targets of book bans in schools and libraries across the United States.
All children deserve access to books that accurately reflect their world. Please consider visiting Women* Who Draw and hiring the best illustrator for the job.
Patrick Hulse (he/him/his) makes stuff for kids. Sometimes that stuff comes in a book, or wrapped in a tiny box, or stuck to the side of a giant glowing teddy bear. Patrick firmly believes that how we tell stories shapes the world and that all children deserve access to equitable, honest, and just media. His debut picture book, At Our Table illustrated by Madelyn Goodnight, received starred reviews from Kirkus and School Library Journal. Patrick has authored and designed craft projects for Todd Oldham Studio, Kid Made Modern, Walmart’s Smarts & Crafts, Making with MoMA, and Crewcuts by J.Crew. He’s made pictures for Honest History Magazine and written poems for NYC’s Fifth Avenue.
